Mavina Hannina Sasive / Mango gravy

  • Jul 7, 2018
  • 2 min read

Mavina Hannina Sasive is very famous dish from Malnad - Karnataka. This is sweet, spicy and little tangy mango side dish, which goes well with rice, Idli, Dosa.

It is usually prepared with small variety of Mangoes - Gojjina mavina hannu / Wild mangoes/kaadu mavina hannu - they are small juicy fibery mangoes and they have quite big gortu (big seed). These Mangoes are delicious they are sweet and slightly tangy which is specifically used to prepare sasive.

Mavina Hannina Sasive or Mango gravy tastes too good with rice.

Let’s get started with this simple recipe.

Mavina Hannina Sasive / Mango gravy

Ingredients

3-4 - Wild mangoes/kaatu mavina hannu

¼ Cup – Water

Salt as required

For Grinding:

1 Cup – Grated fresh coconut

1 Tsp – Cumin Seeds

¼ Tsp – Mustard Seeds

2 – Green Chillies

1/8 Cup – Jaggery

For Tempering:

½ Tsp – Oil

¼ Tsp – Mustard Seeds

¼ Tsp – Cumin Seeds

A pinch of Asafoetida

Method

Step 1

Wash and peel the skin of mangoes and squeeze the mangoes to extract the pulp. Don’t discard the mango seeds add it along with the mango pulp and keep it aside.

Step 2

Grind grated fresh coconut, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, green chillies to a coarse paste. Add jaggery and grind it into fine paste.

Step 3

Add the ground masala to the mango pulp, add water adjust it to desired consistency and salt to taste. Mix well.

Step 4

Heat oil in a pan, once the oil is heated add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and asafetida.

Step 5

Add the prepared tempering to the Mango sasive or Mango gravy and mix well

Sweet, spicy, little tangy and delicious Mango sasive or Mango gravy is ready to serve with rice/Idli/Dosa.

Notes

You can adjust jaggery and green chillies based on the sweetness and sourness of the mangoes.

I have used the gortu (seed) after squeezing the mango as it will be delicious after being soaked in the Sasive/gravy.

Use sweet, tangy wild mangoes for this dish. If you use mangoes which are too sweet it will not be good for this recipe. If you don’t get wild mangoes then at least use mangoes that are sweet & sour.

I have used 1/4 cup of water, you can make sasive/gravy thick (less water) or thin (more water) depending on your preference .
